Surface Finishing in the Furniture Industry

This course has been developed as part of a new joint venture combining the technical expertise of both FIRA and Buckinghamshire New University.  This course will benefit all individuals working in the industry - manufacturers, retailers, specifiers, architects, buyers, interior designers.

Through a series of lectures and practical handling sessions this course will educate delegates on:

Standards and Regulations

Delegates will be made aware of their statutory obligations and how to deal with substances that can be volatile, potentially explosive, corrosive and harmful to those handling and in the immediate surrounds.

Understanding the products available and surface to be coated

-  A review of chemical and water staining
-  What are suitable base coats and top coats
-  Curing of lacquers on different wood based 
   furniture
-  The session will review the following finish types:

          - Pre-catalysed lacquer
          - Pus and Polyesters lacquers
          - Acid catalysed lacquers
          - Water bourne lacquers
          - Electro-statics and powder coating

Product Handling and Safe Application

An opportunity to gain hands on experience of spray application of finishes and to witness some of the possible pitfalls that may occur.

Problems and Possible Remedies

Possible remedies for common finishing ailments such as orange peel, aeration, blooming etc.
