Formaldehyde Testing
Many of the board materials used to manufacture furniture contain formaldehyde-based resins.
Most of this formaldehyde remains bonded within the structure of the manufactured boards, but a very small amount that is classified as “free formaldehyde” can be given off into the air.
Strict limits are placed on the acceptable levels of free formaldehyde and FIRA can assess this using the EN120 extractable formaldehyde method for board, such as particle board and MDF.
Companies use FIRA as part of their quality control procedures and to accumulate third party evidence that they comply with the appropriate European Standards.
