Adhesive Testing

The appearance and integrity of modern furniture relies heavily on the quality of adhesive bonds. Failure of surfacing and edging bonds can result in cosmetic faults as well as compromising construction integrity and reducing resistance to water ingress.  Safety issues present yet another factor and effective bonding systems are essential for products such as mirror faced doors.

The excellent properties of current synthetic adhesives do not, in themselves, guarantee good bonds. FIRA’s laboratories undertake test programmes on behalf of both adhesive and furniture manufacturers.

Standard and FIRA developed tests provide independent evidence of adhesive quality and compatibility of materials being bonded.

Tests undertaken include: 

  • - Adhesive quality (load-bearing and non load-bearing)
  • - Shear strength of lap joints
  • - Adhesion of surfacing materials
  • - Adhesion of edging materials
  • - Elevated temperature tests for kitchens
  • - Performance in fluctuating environmental conditions
  • - Mirror bond tests

Where problems are identified experts interpret lab results, visit factories, ascertain reasons for failure and propose manufacturing improvements.
